Vertical Studio is PVPCOA’s annual
event, conceived in 2012 by institute as a part of Independence Day
celebration, in an effort to bring students from across their years of study
together to work on installations relating to social issues, elements and
celebrations. So far, there have been live competitions, and on-campus displays
of the students’ work. This year, Vertical Studio ventured off-campus for the
first time, with installations being showcased in Ward no. 66 (Market Yard) and
on the institute’s Pirangut campus as ‘Pune Public Space Design Competition’.
Vertical Studio 2014 was titled ‘PRAYAAS
– for a better living environment’. The competition aimed at creating public
art installations to inspire and interact with the public. The installations
were intended to serve as a means to sensitize people to the urban landscape. It
also served to improve the link between people and the cityscape making them
aware about themselves and their city. The installations were centered around
nine essential concepts: Illusion, Signage, Wrong Turn, Yati, Utkranti,
Pratibimba, Parivartan, Astitva and Street-O-Maniac; each addressing issues
ranging from pollution, to the importance of traffic rules.
An
eminent jury, comprising academician and architect Narendra Dengle, artist,
muralist & teacher Sujata Dharap and anthropologist, demographer &
deputy director of Janwani (Virasat, Pune) Prajakta Panshikar evaluated the
installations
